The Licensed Vocational Nurse is an important member of the health-care team. Under the supervision of a doctor or a registered nurse, the LVN provides personal nursing care, such as administering oral and injectable medications, performing therapeutic interventions and treatments, using specialized equipment and instruments and gathering data essential to the care of patients in a variety of health care settings. The LVN functions under the rules and regulations of the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). SRJC LVN graduates have done exceptionally well in the state licensure exam, NCLEXPN. Prospects for employment are very favorable. Graduates have found employment in many areas of nursing including: hospitals, urgent care, skilled nursing facilities, medical clinics, home care, hospice care, developmental care homes, psychiatric facilities, Kaiser, California Prison System, doctors' offices, private homes, health agencies, schools, group homes. LVNs can expect to start at an annual salary of $40,000 to $60,000 a year.

 

Accreditation & Licensure

This program is accredited and approved by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (www.bvnpt.ca.gov). Students finishing the program will receive a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to apply to take the NCLEX-PN licensure examination. Students may also opt for the VN Major with the AS degree. 

In accordance with state law, the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) may deny licensure for crimes substantially related to the practice of nursing. This includes convictions involving sex crimes, drug crimes (including DUI), and crimes of violence. It is the responsibility of the applicant to present sufficient evidence of rehabilitation to the BVNPT prior to licensure application.
